Abilitech Assist: Discover Your Everyday Gestures

Abilitech Assist is an assistive device specifically designed for people with neuromuscular conditions affecting the upper limbs. This medical device is designed for you if you are no longer able to perform your daily tasks independently.

With Abilitech Assist, simple daily activities such as brushing your teeth, eating, or opening doors are now possible—tasks that once required assistance from caregivers. Let’s now take a look at the key features of this medical device and its intended use.

Features of Abilitech Assist

The Abilitech Assist is a device for the arms and is worn on the body. Its design gives the arms a feeling of weightlessness, which helps patients perform their daily tasks. Like the Max Suit, the Abilitech Assist is a device for the upper limbs.

It consists of a arm with a machined aluminum coating and a vest made of breathable fabric. It also features a spring-loaded counterweight system and movable hinges at the back. It wraps around the chest to distribute the load of the device and the arm, thereby providing a feeling of weightlessness.

The vest is made of plastic and aluminum, with a flexible foam insert for greater comfort. It is equipped with a lumbar brace attached to the hips for installation.

Physically, the device is designed to fit a humerus length ranging from 26 to 34 cm. This ensures comfortable wear and an optimal ergonomic fit. It can be worn over adult clothing (shirts) ranging from size XS to 3XL to accommodate different body types.

In addition to the orthosis and vest, the Abilitech Assist is powered by a rechargeable lithium battery and motors that adjust spring tension. The power supply weighs 4.5 kg and can easily fit into a backpack attached to a wheelchair.

However, threading requires assistance from a caregiver. This assistance does indeed make the task easier, ensures safety, and promotes regular and optimal use of the device.

Who is Abilitech Assist for?

The Abilitech Assist medical device is primarily intended for people with neuromuscular weakness in the upper extremities, including the arm and elbow.

This applies in particular to patients with manual muscle test (MMT) scores of 2 to 3 in these joints. This means that they retain some active strength to support movement, but have a significant deficit.

If the patient has muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, a spinal cord injury, or a stroke.

Patients who use it are typically unable to walk or use an electric wheelchair and need assistance with daily activities such as eating, brushing their teeth, or opening doors.

A small plus: it can be adjusted and remains very comfortable. The WAbilitech Assist, sometimes called a “wheelchair,” is designed to help restore functional autonomy in activities of daily living despite significant muscle weakness.
